The Wilshire, which is still in existence, is an elaborate Art Deco structure. This close-up of the front of the building does not do it justice - see below for the best effect of this fabulous masterpiece that was in the same class as the Pantages. When it opened in 1930, it seated 2,295 but it was remodeled in the 1940's to accomodate larger seats and the capacity was reduced to 1,900. Attending a film at the Wilshire was a major event - the audience was always dressed to the nines as the premieres that played here often included the stars of the featured film. It was the only first-run theater that the Chotiner Theaters operated. |
