| Now I'll Tell Fox Film Corporation Released May 26, 1934 Screenplay Written and Directed by Edwin H. Burke Based on the book Now I'll Tell by Mrs. Arnold Rothstein, published by Vanguard in 1934 by Carolyn Rothstein. This is the behind-the-scenes story of the 1919 World Series baseball scandal from the point of view of the gambler who schemed to fix the game. It was one of both Spencer Tracey and Shirley Temples' earliest films. Tracey plays the starring role of "Murray Golden", a small-time gambler who swears to quit the criminal life when he makes $500,000. Golden's long-suffering wife is played by Helen Twelvetrees, and Alice Faye is Golden's mistress. Alice Calhoun plays the part of the wife of Golden's childhood friend, Tommy Doran, who is now a police detective, and Shirley Temple is their daughter. Trivia: Arnold Rothstein, the actual person that this film was based on, was shot during a poker game and died two days later without revealing his killer. Mrs. Harpo Marx (Susan Fleming) had a small part in this film, as did Inez Norton, who was Rothstein's real-life mistress. Playright Mar Linderseed claimed that this screenplay was a rip-off of his failed play "Room 349". This film was banned in Finland when it was released in Europe. This film is preserved in the non-circulating Nitrate Vaults Motion Picture Collection at UCLA, and can be viewed on site, by appointment. "Now I'll Tell" was shown at the Film Forum in New York city June 18, 2001 (www.filmforum.com) No copyright information is available. |
