Alice Calhoun was one of the first stars in the early days of American cinema. Initially cast in bit parts, she quickly rose from a $5-a-day extra to a $1,000 per week contract player for Vitagraph. Her sense of style, charming personality and comedic talent captivated audiences worldwide, and she received hundreds of fan letters each day. When Vitagraph was sold to Warner Brothers in 1925, she continued as a freelance artist in feature films. But when silents became passe and Alice was 35, the offers stopped coming and she unwillingly retired from the silver screen.
Alice in Hollywoodland is the true story about how a girl from Cleveland, Ohio rose to dizzying heights of popularity and found love, wealth and heartache in early Hollywood. Her exciting travels, adventures and lifelong friendships with some of the most fascinating characters of the twentieth century serve to prove that life doesn't end even when stardom is fleeting.
